Influence of Ice Particle Shape on Albedo and Transmittance of Ice-Crystal Clouds

چکیده
Numerous experimental and theoretical studies indicate that the single-scattering properties of nonspherical ice cloud particles can differ substantially from those of surfaceor volume-equivalent spheres (e.g., Volkovitskiy et al. 1984; Takano and Liou 1989). These differences affect the relationship between ice cloud microphysical properties and cloud radiative properties and, consequently, the accuracy of climate model representations of cloud radiative feedbacks (Sun and Shine 1995).

Representation Of A Nonspherical Ice Particle By A Collection Of Independent Spheres For Scattering And Absorption Of Radiation: 3. Hollow Columns And Plates
[1] The ability of an assembly of spheres to represent scattering and absorption by a nonspherical ice crystal of the same volume-to-area (V/A) ratio was previously evaluated for convex shapes (circular cylinders and hexagonal prisms). Here we extend the comparison to indented and hollow prisms, which are common in ice clouds. In the equivalent-sphere representation, the crystal mass and surfac...
متن کاملEffect of crystal size spectrum and crystal shape on stratiform cirrus radiative forcing
Sensitivities of cirrus cloud radiative forcing as well as solar albedo and infrared emittances to ice crystal size spectrum and ice crystal shape were examined using a coupled cloud-radiation model. The singleand bi-modal crystal size distribution were considered and simulated based on field measurements. Optical parameters of ice crystals shaped as hexagonal columns and random Ž . polycrystal...
متن کاملGlobal modeling of mixed‐phase clouds: The albedo and lifetime effects of aerosols
[1] We present a global modeling study of mixed‐phase clouds and have performed sensitivity simulations to explore the ways in which aerosol particles can affect this type of cloud. This study extends previous similar studies in that it takes into account not only the so‐called aerosol lifetime effects on mixed‐phase clouds but also aerosol effects on their albedo. Our findings generally agree ...
متن کاملRemote sensing of crystal shapes in ice clouds
Ice crystals in clouds exist in a virtually limitless variation of geometries. The most basic shapes of ice crystals are columnar or plate-like hexagonal prisms with aspect ratios determined by relative humidity and temperature. However, crystals in ice clouds generally display more complex structures owing to aggregation, riming and growth histories through varying temperature and humidity reg...
متن کاملClassification of particle shapes from lidar depolarization ratio in convective ice clouds compared to in situ observations during CRYSTAL-FACE
[1] A technique to classify ice particles into different shape categories, based on lidar depolarization ratio, is considered. This technique is applied to observations taken during the Cirrus Regional Study of Tropical Anvils and Cirrus Layers–Florida Area Cirrus Experiment (CRYSTAL-FACE) campaign with the airborne Cloud Physics Lidar. The retrieved relative concentrations of particle shapes a...
